Google is Phasing Out AI Overviews
It’s been a few months but Google's integration of AI-generated overviews in search results is finally experiencing a notable decline.
Adaptify Minute Mastery: The Decline of AI-generated Overviews
Recent reports indicate a significant reduction in the frequency of these overviews appearing in search results over the past few months. Initially introduced to provide quick, AI-driven summaries of web content, these overviews were included in as many as 65%+ of search results. Now, the number of AI-generated overviews and results have dropped to a staggeringly small 7%, with platforms like Reddit and Quora taking a huge hit and dropping from 85%-99% in searches respectively. Fewer AI search results is marking a shift in what some believe to be Google's approach to AI driven answers.
According to a report by 9to5Google, there has been a steady decrease in the appearance of these AI-generated snippets, with Search Engine Land noting that their visibility has reached an all-time low. This trend suggests a possible reevaluation by Google of the effectiveness and user preference for AI-driven summaries compared to traditional search results.
Wired adds an interesting angle, highlighting that the reduction in AI overviews came even before some notable incidents, such as the "pizza glue" controversy, which questioned the reliability of such AI-generated content. Meanwhile, BrightEdge observed that the transition away from AI overviews might be part of a broader strategy to refine the quality and reliability of search results.
Interestingly enough, while researching for this newsletter, Googles AI overviews were still the first thing that I saw.
Google Updates Documentation on AI Images
Google has also been making significant updates to its guidelines for handling AI-generated images. Previously, a “beta” flag allowed users to identify images as AI-generated. This has now been replaced with the term “Digital Source Type” in Google's documentation. This change aims to streamline the metadata process without adding unnecessary complexity.
The updated guidelines clarify that there is no direct evidence suggesting any penalties for disclosing an image as AI-generated. However, it's recommended to keep an eye on how these changes may affect image search visibility and rankings. Experimenting with these flags might reveal new insights into optimizing your content for better performance in Google searches.
Of course, we will keep you updated on any changes and are always optimizing Adaptify to be ahead of the game when Google decides to change things up.
